Dave started painting after his wife, Julie, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Research is what changes outcomes, and supporting the science matters to them both.

About Dr. Polyak
Dr. Kornelia Polyak is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and runs a breast cancer research lab at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She is a Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) researcher. In 2026, BCRF gave her the Jill Rose Award for Scientific Excellence.
The research
Tumors are mixed. A tumor holds many types of cancer cells. The more types, the more likely it is to spread and resist treatment.
Tumors evolve. The lab tracks how tumors change under treatment and spread, to predict which cells will resist and choose better treatment.
Cells interact. The lab studies how cancer cells communicate with each other and with their surroundings, including the immune system, to find new targets.
Prevention. The lab studies breast cancer risk and how to stop early disease from becoming invasive. This includes how pregnancy and breastfeeding may protect against triple-negative breast cancer.
Hard-to-treat types. The lab looks for new treatment targets in triple-negative and inflammatory breast cancer.
